I recently watched a documentary about Yakutsk. 🌏
It’s a city in Russia and one of the coldest places in the world. 400 000 people live there. The average daily temperature is around -45 °C (-49 °F), but it can drop to -70 °C (-94 °F). People are required to wear multiple layers of clothing. Buildings usually have two, sometimes even three entrance doors to prevent the cold from getting inside. People can spend a maximum of 15 minutes outdoors. 🥶
The whole city is built on permafrost, which is permanently frozen soil and water. However, because buildings are heated, the permafrost logically starts to melt, causing structures to sink in different places. That’s also why the buildings are constructed on stilts, which keep the heat several meters above the ground.
When the cameraman was filming this documentary, he used three video cameras. He could use each of them for only 10 minutes. If he used one for longer, the camera would freeze and become unusable. 📸
It’s absolutely fascinating. People live there in such harsh conditions, yet they live there. For them, it’s everyday reality and they manage it all. Their entire lives are adapted to this climate. When I was watching the documentary, a local man commented on it beautifully:
“After all, there is no such thing as bad weather; there is just weather and your attitude towards it.”
This thought is truly inspiring. This article is not really about weather — it’s about mindset. What area of your life needs a new approach? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments.
Thanks for reading, and talk to you soon! 🥶
